AIR FORCE SPONSORED FLYING SCHOLARSHIPS 2018 – 2019
The Chief of Air Force has provided funding for members of the AAFC to apply for a number of flying scholarships in the 2018-2019 financial year. These scholarships are designed to allow cadets and qualified Instructor Of Cadets & Officer Of Cadets to participate in aviation activities and in particular to achieve at least Solo Flight standard in either gliders or powered aircraft. Each Wing will have its own allocation for Gliding & Powered Scholarships.
The Scholarships are broken out into 3 Tiers and the granting of a Tier 2 or 3 Scholarship will be based in part on the students progression and aptitude whilst completing Tier 1, together with the recommendation from their respective Wing Flying staff. Wing Senior Aviation Officer will approve Tier 2 or Tier 3 Scholarships as well as nominating the value of each Tier 2 & Tier 3 Scholarship.
Tier 1 Scholarships are open to all AAFC Cadets for both Gliding & Powered Flying. IOC/OOC are eligible to apply for Tier 1 Gliding Scholarships only. For Tier One scholarships funding ceases at the milestone of either First Solo and/or funds being exhausted- whichever occurs first.
Tier 2 Scholarships for IOC/OOC & Cadets are available for both Gliding & Powered Flying. The aim of a Tier 2 Scholarships will be to assist current solo or badge pilots in progressing their training. In all instances, a higher priority shall be given to suitable Tier 1 applicants that have not received a Scholarship previously in either
discipline.
Tier 3 Scholarships are available for development of suitable IOC/OOC and Cadets. The aim of Tier 3 Scholarship is to actively enhance succession planning for the benefit of flying training within the Wing.
At the commencement of Scholarships, each Wing will be issued a guideline from the Director Aviation Operations on the maximum dollar amounts available for each of the 3 Tiers and the disciplines within those Tiers of Scholarships. Each Wing will then decide on the value of Scholarships being offered within those Tiers at a Wing level. The intent is to maximise the numbers of scholarships issued which is dependent on location costs. It is expected that the Defence owned gliders will allow more scholarships to be offered.
