UNIT HISTORY
713SQN can trace its original history back to 79SQN ATC, which was founded during WWII under the command of SQNLDR G. Storey. 79SQN was formed as a squadron for country flights in 5WG, Western Australia. Armadale was one of those flights, and was established 19 January 1942, continuing operations until its close at the end of WWII.
13FLT was founded in 1950 in Armadale. This was confirmed by archived documents that had FLTLT D. Criddle appointed as Officer Commanding - 13 Flight on 31 Aug 1950. The flight’s exact location in Armadale could not be found.
In 1953 under the command of FLTLT A. Stewart, 13FLT commenced parading at the Kelmscott Agricultural Showgrounds, in an old wooden hall off Brookton Highway, Kelmscott.
In late-1961/early-1962, whilst under the command of FLTLT P. Hicks, 13FLT moved to the Maddington Town Hall on the corner of Olga Road and Albany Highway, Maddington.
In mid-1974, 13FLT moved to the Canning Town Hall on the corner of George Street and Albany Highway in Cannington. FLTLT J. Miller commanded 13FLT during this time for just under a decade, until 16 July 1984.
In mid-1982, 13FLT moved to its present location at the Cannington Exhibition Centre, owned by the Canning Agricultural, Horticultural & Recreational Society Inc. situated on the corner of Station Street and Albany Highway, Cannington.
In 2000, 13FLT was renamed to 713 Squadron, Australian Air Force Cadets, a member-squadron of 7WG, in accordance with the national restructure of the AIRTC/AAFC.
