Our History
306SQN (Sydney Grammar School/SCEGGS Darlinghurst) AAFC began life on 17 August 1942 as 2FLT, the second of four Flights within 49 Squadron, Air Training Corps – alongside Scots College, Marist Brothers, and Christian Brothers (Waverley). The Commanding Officer of 49SQN was SQNLDR G. V. Shaw, and FLGOFF Freddy Lenthall commanded Grammar’s FLT.
Following the end of the Second World War, Sydney Grammar School’s ATC unit was recreated as 6FLT, Air Training Corps, on 31 March 1949, under the command of FLGOFF Bellhouse. 6FLT ATC has paraded continuously at Grammar ever since. When in 1975 the Whitlam government disbanded all cadet units, Grammar’s 6FLT continued to parade until a year later in 1976 the Fraser government resuscitated the cadet movement.
In 2001, a national reform of the ATC saw it take on the name AAFC, with units redesignated with the addition of a State-based numeral – NSW became 3 Wing, and 6FLT was hence renamed 306SQN. A year later girls from SCEGGS Darlinghurst were invited to join the unit and they have formed half the personnel of 306SQN for the last 20 years.
